Schedule lead actions based off of dates / Allow multiple workflows on a single lead

Sometimes stand-alone actions need to run on leads such as tasking a user once a specific date has been reached (based on an additional field value).
This can be handled in workflows but isn't always an option if existing workflows are in place. If there was a way to set the action to run from the lead type instead it would get around this.
Alternatively, if a lead could support more than one workflow that could be a solution.
